Celebrity Cruises said that she will control the Celebrity Summit, which sails to Bermuda from the east cast. The mega-ship carries 2,158 passengers, 952 crew, and weighs 91,000 tons.

This is an industry first for an American woman, according to a USA TODAY report.

Seven months prior, Celebrity Cruises hired their first female President and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.

"From the first time I met Kate, I looked forward to this moment, when I could extend my congratulations to her for being such a dynamic and highly respected leader who will continue to pave the way for women in the maritime industry," Lutoff-Perlo said in a statement following the announcement.
