To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1995 UN Conference on Women in Beijing, we're featuring 20 incredible women on MAKERS who participated in the largest ever international gathering of women.

Lydia Alpízar Durán is a Costa Rican/Mexican feminist activist. She is Executive Director of the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), a leading network of feminists and women’s rights advocates around the globe. As a young woman, she organized youth participation in the 1995 UN Women’s Conference and the drafting of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, making sure young women’s voices – from the local to the global level – were heard.

Check back here as we unveil more stories from these incredible women, as part of a special countdown culminating in the announcement of a MAKERS surprise.
