Day 17, Melanne Verveer: MAKERS Celebrates 20 Women of the 1995 UN Conference on Women

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1995 UN Conference on Women in Beijing, we're featuring 20 incredible women on MAKERS who participated in the largest ever international gathering of women.

As Deputy Chief of Staff to First Lady Hillary Clinton, Melanne Verveer was instrumental in organizing the US delegation to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. Following the historic success of the Beijing Conference, Verveer co-founded, along with Hillary Clinton, the Vital Voices Global Partnership, an NGO which supports emerging women leaders around the world. In 2009, President Barak Obama appointed Verveer to be the first United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues. Today, Verveer continues to advocate for women’s rights around the world as the Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security.
