New Zealand's New 'Gender Diverse' Category

Some people find it difficult to identify themselves as strictly male or female. As a result, many people find it difficult to identify their gender on a questionnaire when their options are limited to just two options: male or female.

In response to this issue, Bust reported that New Zealand is making a new category on their Statistics New Zealand form, and they are calling it gender diverse.

According to Bust, the entire government plans to implement it and is working to incorporate the term.

Bust reported that Joanne Allan, the department's classifications manager, said that gender identity is "about how person feels and experiences their gender, which can change over their lifetime. We've worked with a wide range of government and community groups to finalize this standard and the terminology."
