Elizabeth Alexandra Mary 'Windsor' also known as The Queen turns 90 years old on Thursday. Of course there will be cake on such an occasion — one of which will be made by Nadiya Hussain.
We know Nadiya as the girl next door with the headscarf who won Great British Bake Off in 2015 and Elizabeth as that woman on our bank notes. And they are both icons of Britain today. From her time spent driving trucks in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War to driving the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia around in a royal Land Rover during one of his visits, despite the fact that women in Saudi Arabia are still fighting for the right to drive, Queen Elizabeth II serves as a great female role model. She continues her charity work as patron to over 600 organizations.
As the UK's longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has seen this country change dramatically over the years, demonstrated by the woman who has been chosen to make her birthday cake. Both women have challenged perceptions and brought the nation together in their own unique way.
Former chef to Her Majesty, Darren McGrady, has revealed that every year the Queen requests the same chocolate cake for her birthday, one whose recipe comes from Queen Victoria’s cook. However, this year, alongside that traditional cake the Queen and her family have asked Nadiya to bake something special for her Majesty. Hussain has said she will be presenting the Queen with a orange drizzle cake with orange curd and orange buttercream which is being delivered to Windsor Castle today.
We wish the Queen a very happy 90th birthday and hope she enjoys her cake.
