Depressing Report Says Only 7 Percent of CEOs at the Largest Companies Are Women
Women continue to make strides in the corporate leadership arena, but a recent Fortune report reveals we still have a long way to go: 93 percent of the world's biggest corporations are still led by men.
According to a survey conducted by sales analytics company DiscoverOrg, there were just 1,835 female C-Level execs out of the 9,975 tallied for the survey; and a staggering 7 percent of executives at Fortune 1000 companies are women.
"The biggest surprise to me was how little gender diversity there still is," says Henry Schuck, cofounder and chief executive of DiscoverOrg. "You might expect less than 50 percent of C-level executives to be women, but I was surprised at how much less it was."
That's not even looking at racial disparities in the workplace: a recent American Association of University Women study says last year that Asian, black, and Hispanic women made up only 3 percent of board directors at Fortune 500 companies.
The report did revel some good news: women are gaining a foothold in human resources and marketing, with 48 percent of chief marketing officers and 62.2 percent of chief human resources officers being women. Fortune suggests this might be due to "marketing and HR fields being seen as 'softer' specialties that require the supposedly 'female' trait of empathy."
"You sort of wonder if women are being pigeonholed," Schuck said.
