Sandra Cisneros to Be Awarded a National Medal of Arts By President Obama

On September 22, some of the nation's most renowned artists will be awarded the 2015 National Medals of Arts and National Humanities Medals by President Barack Obama at the White House along with First Lady and MAKER Michelle Obama.

Among some of the year's recipients are huge names like Mel Brooks, Morgan Freeman, and Audra McDonald, but also MAKER Sandra Cisneros.

Cisneros, a Mexican-American author who wrote "The House on Mango Street" and many other groundbreaking works, will be awarded a National Medal of Arts for "enriching the American narrative" through her novels, short stories, and poetry, exploring "issues of race, class, and gender through the lives of ordinary people straddling multiple cultures."

Be sure to watch Cisneros' exclusive MAKERS video in the player above to learn a little more about her before tuning into the event's livestream on Thursday.
