Sen. Tammy Baldwin Joins US Senate Democratic Leadership Team

After becoming the first female Senator from Wisconsin, and the first openly gay U.S. Senator, Tammy Baldwin has now joined the Senate Democratic leadership team.

She will be working under the chamber's new minority leader, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York.

In a statement, Baldwin said she's very proud and thankful to join the leadership team. "Too many Americans feel like they are being left behind," she said. "We need to change that and I am focused on making a difference in people’s everyday lives."

She shares with MAKERS her thoughts when it comes to choosing candidates, "I think we would be better governed if our legislative bodies looked like America or looked like districts that elect them."

Baldwin is known for her strong support of LGBTQ rights and her pride for universal health care.
