Susan Schneider Accepts Award On Behalf of Late Husband Robin Williams With a Moving Speech

On October 22, Susan Schneider accepted the 2016 Angel Harvey Heart of a Patriot Award on behalf of her late husband, Robin Williams, who took his own life in 2014, and who frequently entertained troops overseas.

Despite a heavy heart that evening, on what would have been the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, Schneider told the audience of the United Service Organization's 75th Anniversary Gala in Chicago that there is no place she would rather be to "feel the love in this room."

"I'm here with you tonight because of my husband's heart," she began. "Robin absolutely had the heart of a patriot... Robin was also a warrior, and like so many of our finest servicemen and women, he had battles to face."

And, amongst his greatest battles, she revealed, was his fight against Lewy Body Disease, a form of dementia, which was originally thought to be Parkinson's.

For this reason, among others, Schneider has chosen to partner with the American Brain Foundation in an effort to eradicate brain diseases like those suffered by her beloved husband and other military veterans coming home from service.

"The love my husband and I have shared has been my beacon and my guide. The love all of you give by your choice to take your worst days and use them to give someone their best days — that devotion and caring for others is my strength."
