Day 20, Alyse Nelson: MAKERS Celebrates 20 Women of the 1995 UN Conference on Women

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1995 UN Conference on Women in Beijing, we're featuring 20 incredible women on MAKERS who participated in the largest ever international gathering of women.

Alyse Nelson was a college student when she attended the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. In fact, Nelson never received the proper paperwork required for the conference, and furtively attended the NGO Forum in Huairou, China under a tourist visa. In the years following the Beijing Conference, Nelson helped co-found, along with former Secretary of State Madeline Albright and First Lady Hillary Clinton, the Vital Voices Global Partnership, an NGO dedicated to supporting emerging women leaders around the world. Today, she sits as its president and chief executive officer.
