Woman's Letter "To the Guy Who Took My Picture Without My Permission" Goes Viral
Ashley Mason Brown took to The Huffington Post in an open letter written to the guy who took her picture without her permission.
"You took my picture tonight without my permission," she begins.
The man who she is writing the letter to took photos of her and her friend in a bar while watching USC lose in the Final Four.
"You pretended not to hear me when I asked you, 'Hey did you just take my picture?' 'Not tried. Did.' You look back at me. Daring me to do something about it," she writes.
Brown forced the man to show her the picture and then delete it. She also told him to delete the picture of her friend that he took as well. She tells him what he did was wrong and threatens to report him if he continues to harass her.
"You look at me and sneer. I can't remember what you say verbatim, but it's something along the lines of 'Who you gonna tell?' At that moment, you almost made me feel like I was helpless. Like you could stand five feet away and take as many pictures of me and my friends for your spank bank and make us feel as uncomfortable as possible, and there was nothing I could do about it. >But there is always something I can do about it. Always," She wrote.
Brown ended up alerting the bartender of his behavior which led to a fight between the man and bartender and then police involvement.
She did not press charges as the man's wife watched the police handle the situation.
Brown's story sheds light on your responsibility to confront these situations. With Sexual Assault Awareness Month, "It's our duty to call people out on this behavior."
Be bold, get involved, and speak up for yourself and situations like these, because in short, "Sexual harassment is not okay. It never will be."
