The Cool New Way Maria Sharapova Motivates Her Fans
Ever wonder what it's like to be on the receiving end of a 100 mph serve? That's how fast Maria Sharapova serves against opponents on the court ... and at this year's U.S. Open, you can try to return it, too.
During the entire tournament, running Aug. 31-Sept.13, you can stop by American Express's virtual reality booth called "You vs. Sharapova." A computer-generated version of Sharapova will queue up one of her signature serves — and you'll be armed with a racquet IRL. Sharapova shared an awesome behind-the-scenes photo of what it took (hint: nine hours!) to create this experience for her fans.
"I think our sport has grown so much because we as players have been able to get closer to the fans, especially through social media," Sharapova told ESPN.com. "This takes it to another level."
Anyone with a ticket to the U.S. Open can stop by during the iconic two-week tournament to take the challenge — so start practicing your swing!
