My Great-Grandmother and Barack Obama, Betty Reid Soskin
When 96-year-old Betty Reid Soskin attended President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, she carried a photo of her great-grandmother, a former slave, in her breast pocket.
BETTY SOSKIN: I attended the inauguration in 2009 with the picture of my great grandmother in my breast pocket. And I'm witnessing the inauguration of America's first African-American president. Before the White House, it was built by slaves.
And my great grandma was enslaved. And this was all happening on the Capitol Mall in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln, whose life was contemporary with the life of my great grandmother in my breast pocket. And that's how fast the time goes.
