In her MAKERS interview, Yang Liping talks about her path into dance and how she has experienced other cultures through it.
At a young age, Yang Liping was selected to join an ethnically diverse song and dance troupe dedicated to preserving regional dance traditions. Liping was with this group for ten years, giving her a chance to go deeper into the lives of various ethnic Chinese minorities and learn their traditional dances. After these ten years, Yang decided to invest her money and create her own dance pieces to keep the spirit of Chinese traditional folk dance alive. Inspired by the ethnic minorities, specifically Thai ones, that worship the peacock, “The Spirit of the Peacock” brought Yang a first place prize in the Chinese National Dance Competition. Yang moved back to Yunnan in 2000, after raising enough money to produce and perform many large scale traditional ethnic dance pieces. She has dedicated her life to pursuing her art and currently serves as director, choreographer, and star of “Dynamic Yunnan”, a piece that has been performed more than 4,000 times in China and internationally.
